A QA engineer in Latin America costs about $5,000 a month at Plugg's benchmark, against about $14,000 a month for a US tester, a difference of $9,000 a month. Plugg sends a vetted shortlist in about 3 days, and your engineer works US hours inside your sprint, your tracker and your release process.
What a QA engineer costs: US vs Latin America
| Experience | US monthly median cost | Latin America monthly median cost | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior | $14,000 | $5,000 | $9,000 a month (64% less) |
How we calculated these numbers
What the figures are. Monthly cost for a senior-level hire, in US dollars. The US column is what the employer pays each month for a US hire, and the Latin America column is what a comparable hire in Latin America costs each month. The figures come from Plugg Technologies.
Difference. We subtract the Latin America figure from the US figure. Multiply it by 12 for a rough yearly saving.
These figures are illustrative, based on typical senior-level ranges, and are not a quote. Your actual number depends on the role, seniority, stack and country. Request developer rates for a real number.

Request Developer RatesTeams usually notice QA only when a release goes wrong, which is why the role is easy to underhire and expensive to skip. This page covers what QA engineers cost in Latin America, what to screen for, and where to hire them.
What a QA engineer does
A QA engineer owns the answer to "is this safe to ship?" They write test plans, build and maintain automated tests, run regression before releases, and file bugs that developers can reproduce on the first try. On a US product team they work inside the sprint next to developers and a product manager, not at the end of the line.
The role splits into a few shapes. Manual testers explore the product and catch what scripts miss. Automation engineers (often called SDETs) write code to test code. Performance and security testers specialize further. First hires usually sit in the first two groups, so be clear about the mix before you write the job description.
Skills and stack to look for
- Test strategy: test plans, risk-based regression, exploratory testing, bug reports with clear reproduction steps
- Web automation: Playwright, Cypress or Selenium, plus a language to write them in (TypeScript, Python or Java)
- API testing: Postman, REST Assured or pytest against REST and GraphQL APIs, and contract testing
- Mobile: Appium, XCUITest or Espresso if you ship an app
- Performance: k6, JMeter or Locust for load tests
- Delivery: tests wired into CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins), test data management and Jira or Linear workflows
What affects the rate
Automation skill moves the number more than anything else. An engineer who writes and maintains a Playwright suite costs more than a manual tester, and performance or security specialists cost more again. English level, the country and the engagement model also shift the rate. The figures in the table above are senior-level monthly benchmarks from Plugg, so ask for a quote for your exact role when you are budgeting a hire.
How Plugg screens, and what to test yourself
Plugg screens candidates against your hiring bar and for advanced-level English communication before you see a profile, and has also helped clients with technical vetting. You then interview the shortlist and make the final decision.
QA is a role where written communication is half the job, so test it directly. Give the candidate a short feature description and ask for a test plan, then give them a buggy page and ask for the bug reports they would file. Strong candidates ask what the feature is for before they start testing it, and their reports are specific enough that a developer could fix the issue without a follow-up question. For automation roles, ask them to walk you through a test suite they built and what they did about flaky tests.
When to hire a QA engineer
- Your developers are testing their own work and bugs keep reaching customers
- You release often and regression takes days of manual effort
- You have no automated tests, or a suite nobody trusts
- You are launching a mobile app or a major integration and need a dedicated tester for a few months
Jordan Krey, VP of Engineering at SingleOps, built part of his engineering team with nearshore hires from Mexico and Brazil, including QA engineers. He said they were "engaged in our company our culture, asking questions and giving their opinions."
Where to hire QA engineers
QA works best when testers can talk to developers during the day, so time-zone overlap matters more here than for many roles. Mexico and Colombia sit on or near US Central time, which suits teams from Chicago to the West Coast. Brazil and Argentina overlap with a US Eastern afternoon. If your testers will also write production code, compare the role with a backend or full-stack hire.
