A DevOps engineer in Latin America costs about $7,500 a month at Plugg's benchmark, against about $19,000 a month for a US hire, a difference of $11,500 a month. Plugg sends a vetted shortlist in about 3 days, and your engineer works US hours on your stack.
What a DevOps engineer costs: US vs Latin America
| Experience | US monthly median cost | Latin America monthly median cost | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior | $19,000 | $7,500 | $11,500 a month (61% less) |
How we calculated these numbers
What the figures are. Monthly cost for a senior-level hire, in US dollars. The US column is what the employer pays each month for a US hire, and the Latin America column is what a comparable hire in Latin America costs each month. The figures come from Plugg Technologies.
Difference. We subtract the Latin America figure from the US figure. Multiply it by 12 for a rough yearly saving.
These figures are illustrative, based on typical senior-level ranges, and are not a quote. Your actual number depends on the role, seniority, stack and country. Request developer rates for a real number.

Request Developer RatesA good DevOps engineer makes every other engineer faster, and a bad pipeline taxes the whole team every day. This page covers what DevOps engineers cost in Latin America, what to screen for, and where to hire them.
What a DevOps engineer does
A DevOps engineer owns how code gets from a developer's laptop to production and stays healthy there. That means build and deploy pipelines, cloud infrastructure defined as code, monitoring and alerting, secrets and access, and the on-call process when something breaks. On a US team they work alongside backend developers, who ship the services, and security or compliance people, who set the rules.
The titles overlap: site reliability engineer, platform engineer, cloud engineer and infrastructure engineer all describe pieces of the same work. Write the job description around the problems you have, such as slow deploys, rising cloud bills or no monitoring, and not around the title.
Skills and stack to look for
- Cloud: AWS, GCP or Azure, including networking, IAM and cost management
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform, Pulumi or CloudFormation, with state and modules kept in version control
- Containers and orchestration: Docker and Kubernetes, Helm, and a clear view of when Kubernetes is overkill
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins or ArgoCD, with build caching, test stages and safe rollbacks
- Observability: Prometheus and Grafana, Datadog or New Relic, log pipelines and alert design that avoids noise
- Scripting and security: Bash and Python, secrets management, least-privilege access, and vulnerability scanning
What affects the rate
Cloud depth and Kubernetes experience move the number more than anything else, and engineers who have carried an on-call rotation cost more than those who have not. English level, the country and the engagement model also shift it. The figures in the table above are senior-level monthly benchmarks from Plugg, so ask for a quote for your exact stack when you are budgeting a hire.
How Plugg screens, and what to test yourself
Plugg screens candidates against your hiring bar and for advanced-level English communication before you see a profile, and has also helped clients with technical vetting. You then interview the shortlist and make the final decision.
For DevOps, talk through a real incident. Ask the candidate to describe the worst outage they handled, how they found the cause and what they changed afterward. Then give them a scenario close to yours, such as a service that deploys slowly or a database that fills its disk, and ask how they would investigate. Strong engineers ask what changed recently and how they would know before they touch anything. Check whether they have run Terraform in a team, with reviews and remote state, and not only alone.
When to hire a DevOps engineer
- Deploys are manual, slow or scary
- Your cloud bill keeps rising and nobody owns it
- You are preparing for a security review, SOC 2 or a larger customer
- Your developers spend a day a week on infrastructure instead of product
Eric Yu, Co-Founder and CTO of Cloud Cath, said Plugg introduced his team to a senior DevOps engineer "within 4 days of the need" and that he is "as good as any SF based engineer at a fraction of the cost." Plugg also sourced and hired a DevOps engineer for a Series A med-tech startup.
Where to hire DevOps engineers
DevOps work includes incident response, so a shared working day matters. Mexico and Colombia sit on or near US Central time, and Argentina and Brazil overlap with a US Eastern afternoon. If you also need the people who build the services these pipelines ship, see backend developers, and for the data layer, see data engineers.
